Bethel, an area in the southwest part of Howell Township, was settled in when a lot was donated by Israel Reynolds to build a Methodist Church that was completed in A school house opened in , followed by a store in Today, the J. The Borough of Farmingdale was known as Marsh Bog until its name was changed to Upper Squankum in , before becoming known as Farmingdale in This area was a part of Howell until it became a separate borough in Farmingdale was the center of commerce in the nineteenth century and was home to churches, taverns, shops, and other establishments.
Howell was incorporated as a township in and named after Richard Howell, the third governor of New Jersey who served from to At the time of its incorporation, Howell Township included its current area in addition to present-day Wall Township, Brick Township, Lakewood Township, as well as several small boroughs along the Atlantic Coast.
Brick Township, Lakewood Township, and the coastal boroughs separated from Howell when Ocean County was formed in In , Wall Township seceded from Howell Township. Early roadways in the area were built to connect farms with the Manasquan River for transportation of goods, and access to other farms, mills, and churches. Other roadways were created to connect different settlements and named accordingly — Lakewood Farmingdale Road and Adelphia Farmingdale Road are two such examples.
Stagecoach service operated through the area starting in the s along Route , part of which is called Stagecoach Road in nearby Millstone. By the early- to mids, the population in and around Howell Township had grown significantly and many schools were built to accommodate the growing youth population.
A number of churches were also built during this same time period. Agriculture and Industry Farming continued to be the primary economic activity in the area through the early s, and some estimates are that Monmouth County contained over , acres of active farmland in MWMA, Manasquan Reservoir offers nature and exercise related activities such as fishing, bird watching, jogging, biking, dog walking.
The reservoir also has a nature exhibit where people can go see the local wildlife. Alfred C. Sauer Park at Echo Lake offers a dock for fishing and kayaking, a nature trail and a pavilion overlooking the lake which can be rented.
There is no swimming but there are grills and picnic tables as well as a playground. In , the township renamed the park in memory of Alfred C. Sauer, an environmentalist who worked to preserve the park and other natural environments in the township.
