The ease of connection, the particular mating type, durability, the necessary insulation between pins and so on, is determined by the environment that the connectors will perform in. This includes protection from extreme temperatures, constant vibration, moisture, contaminants, dust, dirt, and the like.
Because connectors must perform many functions under many conditions, their design varies widely for a broad range of applications, from consumer electronics to powering aerospace , medical equipment and military hardware.
Their only commonality is that they provide an inline connect and disconnect within a circuit. The shapes and sizes of the connectors are designed to fit the needs. Connectors consist of a number of signal contacts, a number of power contacts, and configurations such as board-to-board, wire-to-wire, or board-to-wire. Manufacturing of connectors produces an extensive catalog of standard designs such as 2, 3 and 4 pin connectors or similar conductor locking connectors, or weather resistant connectors.
Terminals are another necessary component to establish an electronic or electrical connection in a wire harness. The terminal is an electromechanical device that terminates a conductor to a fixed post, stud, chassis, etc. They are generally composed of a metal or alloy, but there are other conductive materials available such as carbon or silicon. Terminals come in many designs, shapes and sizes.
They are the familiar pins in connector housings that provide electrical or electronic conduction to secure the connections. Terminal types vary, too.
They may be crimped connections, soldered connections, press-fit in a ribbon connector or even wire-wrap. They also come in many shapes such as ring, spade, hook, quick-disconnect, bullet, butt terminals and flagged. Terminal selection will depend on your design and application as a whole. While they don't directly help with car stereo installations, the speaker wiring harnesses we offer let you use the factory speaker wires for your new speakers, just like car stereo harnesses.
Their plugs match the factory speaker wiring plugs in the vehicle, and the other ends slide over the new speakers' terminals. That way, you don't have to run new wire from the radio to all the speaker locations in your vehicle or cut factory wires. These adapters are also free with a car speaker purchase from Crutchfield. We'll show you! Use our vehicle selector to tell us what you drive. Once you select a new stereo, our Kit Finder app will show you the different options you have for installation gear.
You'll be able to clearly see which features each harness retains and how much they cost. You can also contact one of our expert advisors for help choosing the right harnesses to work with your vehicle. They can also answer any questions you have about the installation and give you some idea about how difficult it'll be — some vehicles are easier than others.
I got a Chevy Blazer LS and they cut the factory plug-in off the wiring harness to the radio and I'm trying to wire the plug-in back on to it and I can't seem to figure out what color codes go to what speakers in the truck.
I put an off switch on back-up camera works good but would rather be able to activate back-up camera at any time without damaging stereo. Can you figure a wiring scheme for that? Question: I have a ford Ranger with Pioneer premium audio. Is it doable? What will I need to do it? All I'm interested in is listening to the radio, CD, and tape cassette which the Ford deck doesn't have. Any other added features the Ford unit has MP-3, satellite radio, etc, to offer are irrelevant as long as they aren't necessary for the operation of the vehicle!
Much Thanks. I have a dodge charger trying to put a leadfan 7" touch screen car stereo in it how do I bypass the stock amp. When I hooked up my Alpine deck, the yellow battery wire and the black ground wire I spliced into the factory harness however, the factory harness has a lighter gauge than the alpine harness.
I think I should have connected the heavier gauge wires to a bat terminal at fuse box and the ground directly to chassis. Would this be correct? I have a Pontiac vibe and I just installed a double din Stereo and everything works just like it should Except there is absolutely no sound coming out????
Please help. I'm plan to install a power acoustik dvd headunit. What harness will I need so i can keep my steering wheel controls? I have a Toyota sienna LE. Can you help me with this information? Where can I get these???
Our discounts on the kit, harness, and other gear you'll need when installing a new car stereo or car speakers can help you do it yourself while saving you money.
This installation guide shows you how to remove your old car stereo and install and wire a new stereo in your car. When you replace your factory radio with a new aftermarket receiver, you'll lose your steering wheel audio controls. Here's how to get them back. Take some of the stress out of your car stereo installation with a custom-crimped Crutchfield ReadyHarness. This exclusive service will make connecting your new stereo to your car much, much easier.

Virtual agent: Thanks! When our wiring engineers set to work designing the perfect custom harnesses, the types of connectors they use are based on a variety of factors such as the types of connections present, what type of insulation is needed, and what kind of power and signal contacts there are. Different configurations within the wiring harness itself can dictate the need for one connector over another.
Our team will typically utilize standard connector designs with either a 2-pin, 3-pin, or 4-pin setup. Effectively bringing efficient design, manufacturing, and logistics together in one cohesive package is the mark of a great custom wire harness manufacturer.
Mitigating for delays and cost overruns has become a speciality with our team. Terminals are what they sound like—their termination of a wire. At this important junction, you might have the end of a wiring component or you may have a connector to a different component, it all depends on the needs of the system.
Terminals come in a variety of sizes and shapes, as well, and are all pertinent to their particular application. Terminals play into the overall design of wire harness connections by providing the necessary junction from which a cabling harness can be terminated or progress to other components. Their design is just as crucial as any aspect of the custom wire harness in order to produce a product with the continuity, integrity, and safety required to pass our stringent in-house quality assurance testing.
When our designers first sit down with our clients, we work to understand the application in its entirety, as well as the budget and time constraints that require careful project management.
One of the first steps in choosing the perfect wire harness connectors for a custom wire harness includes looking at the location and environmental factors of the intended application. Wire harnesses are usually behind-the-scenes operators, hanging out inside of the overall system to provide their critical support role. This can mean some very constrained locations where temperature, abrasion, moisture, and other variables all come into play.
Think about military applications.
