Then I wedged that stick against the ground in an orientation to prevent the pulley from rotating. But my wooden stick home-made method worked fine for me. One thing to be careful about, when pulling the pulley from the crankshaft using a puller, first install the bolt back in-- but not tight — then use the head of the bolt to push on with the center of the puller. If that happens and you continue to pull on it with the puller something expensive will break.
Seems like that would work, but removing the starter motor is a pretty big job sometimes. Just noticed this idea already posted above, sorry for the repeat. Thanks for the tip George. Is this the tool you are referring to? Apparently, removing to the starter motor is not as difficult as I thought. You can access it from above in a Mazda 6. For that tool to work the two holes it grabs obviously have to be present.
Does your crank pulley sport those two holes? Hum, mine looks like this. Maybe a mechanic can shed some light on it. Hey everyone! Should I be worried or a little wobble is normal? When I took the bolt out the last couple threads were destroyed. Cleaned up the crank threads by blasting it out with break cleaner, and shop air.
Then threaded a bolt I had laying around in and out a few hundred times it seemed going slow and using PB blaster. This got most of the gunk out and cleaned up the crank threads. Then installed the new pulley. Still wobbles a little though I'd say something isn't right there Did you torque it to to seat the pulley all the way before doing your final passes?
Define "a little", please. Just wobbles a little. Idk how to explain it. Maybe an eight of an inch? Its not a smooth spin by any means but its not crazy wobble shake that makes me worry about it falling off. That bolt is crazy tight. I honestly haven't looked closely at the balancer on our car -- does it have the elastomer ring like the old style balancers?

All times are GMT Then secure and pull the strap to remove the pulley. A harmonic balancer is a front end accessory drive component that is connected to the crankshaft of an engine. The purpose of the harmonic balancer is to reduce engine vibration and in many cases, serve as a pulley for drive belts. The cost of replacing the harmonic balancer varies mainly due to the type and model of the vehicle and the type and brand of parts used.
Is a crankshaft pulley and harmonic balancer the same thing? They are two different things. The harmonic balancer slides onto the front of the crankshaft which has a keyway on it to keep it from slipping and a bolt and wide washer holds it in place. If it only occurs when you enage the AC then it is a compressor issue. A harmonic balancer reduces vibration by allowing some slipage between the belts and the engine. It also absorbs woble.
Start your engine and check the harmonic balancer to see if it wobbles while the engine is running. Take a flashlight and shine it directly onto the balancer to see if it goes in and out while rotating.
